Payee Number Requirements
TIN Components
The 11-digit TIN is made up of three components:
- Prefix (one-digit)
- Base Number (nine-digits)
- Check Digit (one-digit)
Component | Definition |
---|---|
Prefix |
The prefix digit is a number that indicates the type of number provided by the payee:
Note: A prefix of 2 followed by a SSN or ITIN can be used for inquiry purposes. |
Base Number | The nine-digit base number is the EIN, Comptroller-assigned number or randomly assigned number that replaces SSNs and ITINs. |
Check Digit |
The check digit is calculated with an algorithm to ensure each TIN is unique.
