Lesson 4: Additional Inquiry Screens
Payee Name Search (PAYNAM)
PAYNAM is used to search for a payee’s TIN when the SSN, ITIN or EIN is not known and only the name is available.
Accessing PAYNAM
Access to PAYNAM is by Line 1 only. It is not accessible from INQMEN.
There are two methods you can use for a PAYNAM search:
Method 1: Enter only the screen ID PAYNAM on Line 1 and press Enter. TINS displays the required and optional entry fields.

Entry Field Values
ORGANIZATION TYPE
(Required):- 1: Enter 1 for an individual or sole owner.
- 2: Enter 2 for a business entity or partner name of a partnership.
EXACTNESS CODE
(Required):- Enter 1 for most exact match, up through 6 for least exact match.
ZIP CODE
(Required):- Enter the five-digit ZIP code.
- If it is unknown, enter five zeros (00000).
NAME
(Required):- Enter the name. Do not enter special characters.
ADDRESS CODE
(Optional):- Enter A to display the address.
– or – - Leave it blank.
- Enter A to display the address.
Method 2: Enter the screen ID PAYNAM on Line 1 followed by the values for each required/optional field with a period (.) between each field and ending with a period.
Examples:
- Without the optional address code: Enter PAYNAM.1.1.00000.NAME BEING SEARCHED.(space). Press Enter.
- With the optional address code A: Enter PAYNAM.1.1.12345.NAME BEING SEARCHED.A. Press Enter.

Entry Field Descriptions
ORGANIZATION TYPE
:-
Identifies the type of payee to be searched. The valid values are:
- 1: Individual or sole owner
- 2: Business entity or partner name of a partnership
EXACTNESS CODE
:- Defines the level of exactness matching for the name to be searched. Users should start the search with the highest level of exactness matching (value 1). If there are no results, users should incrementally decrease the level (values 2 - 6).
ZIP CODE:
-
If the name being searched is on file, enter a ZIP code to refine the search. Choose one:
- Five-digit ZIP code
- First three digits of a ZIP code followed by two zeros (12300)
- or - - Five zeros (00000)
NAME
:- Enter up to 50 characters of the name to be searched. Use upper or lower case but no special characters.
ADDRESS CODE
:- If the name being searched is on file, enter an A to display the address(es). Choose one:
- Enter A to display the address.
- or - - Leave it blank if the address is not needed.
- Enter A to display the address.
PAYNAM Results
TINS displays search results in numeric order, which helps determine if multiple mail codes exist for each TIN.

Results Field Descriptions
STAT
-
Displays the TIN mail code status:
- A: Active
- I: Inactive
TYPE
- Displays a four-character value that defines the TINS source the PAYNAM information was retrieved from. See the table of four-character values in Payee Name Search (PAYNAM)
in TexPayment Resource.
PAYEE NUMBER
- Displays the 11-digit TIN.
ENTITY NAME
- Displays the name of the individual or entity.
ADDRESS
- Displays the mailing address for the payee number and mail code if address code option A is used. Displays the message SECURED MAIL CODE if the mail code is set up with security level 2 and the user who performed the search is from an agency other than the securing source agency.
ZIP CODE
- Displays the five-digit ZIP code for the mail code that is displayed.
MAIL CODE
- Displays a three-digit mail code if the TIN displayed is for a payee.
TAXPAYER NUMBER
- Displays the Comptroller-assigned 11-digit taxpayer number associated with a payee’s TIN. Displays 11 zeros if the TIN displayed does not have a taxpayer number.
SSN/ITIN/EIN
- Displays only if the address code option A is not used. Otherwise, this field displays the masked SSN, ITIN or EIN (XXXXX1234) associated with the TIN.
Cross-Reference Inquiry
When viewing results on PAYNAM, you may link to a different inquiry screen to view information for a TIN in the search results and then return to the PAYNAM results screen without losing those results. You can enter any TINS inquiry screen ID for a cross-reference inquiry.
Steps:
1. From your PAYNAM results screen, overtype the information on Line 1 by entering:
- X/(Six-letter screen ID).(11-digit TIN). Example: X/PYADDR.7XXXXXXXXX3.
- Press End on your keyboard to delete all data that displays after the 11-digit TIN on Line 1.

2. Press Enter to display the requested inquiry screen.

3. Press the PF6 key to return to your PAYNAM results screen.
Note: If any information is changed on the cross-reference screen, the PF6 key is disabled and you cannot return to the PAYNAM results screen. Press any PF key displayed on the screen or clear your screen to restart the PAYNAM search.
