Method and Frequency of Payroll
State law requires most state employees’ salaries to be paid once a month. There are limited exceptions for agencies to pay certain employees twice a month.
Monthly Payroll Payments
For employees whose salaries are paid once a month, payday is the first workday of the month after each payroll period. A payroll period is one calendar month, so generally agencies pay state employees on the first day of each calendar month for work performed during the past calendar month. However, when determining the payday for a payroll period, a workday does not include Saturday, Sunday or a national holiday.
The table below depicts how national holidays and weekends impact the payday for state employees paid monthly.
First Workday/Payday Examples
| Example | Sunday | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Important note: For holidays falling on a Sunday (example C), all Federal Reserve banks and branches are officially closed the following Monday. While the payday remains the Monday after the holiday, this means state employees cannot be sure their direct deposits will be posted to their accounts until the next business day. Individual bank policy determines when ACH deposits are available.
