TINS Inquiry

Lesson 3: Standardization, Validation and Security

What is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the IRS.

The IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who are not eligible to obtain a SSN from the SSA. Payees with an ITIN are set up in TINS the same as an individual with an SSN.

Note: All SSNs, EINs and ITINs submitted to TINS are edited using the SSA and IRS guidelines. Refer to the SSA and IRS websites for SSN, ITIN and EIN numbering guidelines ― invalid numbers are rejected by TINS.
