Lesson 3: Standardization, Validation and Security

Address Standardization

Addresses that agencies enter into TINS go through a validation process where the address is compared to data provided by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). This USPS software update is uploaded on a monthly basis. TINS attempts to standardize the address by applying standard abbreviations or adding the “plus four digits” of a zip code to the address entered. A benefit of standardization is potentially lower postal rates.
