Comptroller Mainframe Password Guidelines and Restrictions
For access and password questions, contact your agency security coordinator or the Comptroller’s helpdesk at (512) 463-4357.
How to Log On to HRIS
After you have been assigned a user ID and temporary password and granted access to the HRIS application by the Comptroller’s office, you can begin logging into HRIS.
- Initiate the communications software on your computer and wait for the
Texas map screen to appear.
Note: If the Texas map does not appear on your screen, a system error may have occurred or your terminal may not be connected to the mainframe. For assistance, contact your system support specialist.
For institutions that do not enter the system through the Texas map screen, make the proper selection from your application menu.

- Enter USAS.
- Press Enter. You will have to wait a few seconds while your terminal
establishes contact. Do not press any keys while you wait as this may cause
your terminal to lock up.
When your terminal establishes contact with USAS, the log-on screen appears.

- Enter your user ID in the
USER ID
field. Tab to the password line. - Enter your current password in the
PASSWORD
field.Note: To protect the confidentiality of your password, it is not displayed on the screen as you enter it.
- Press Enter.
The session manager screen appears.

The eight-character net ID code in the upper right corner of the screen is your terminal’s system identification code. In the example above, the
Write down your terminal identification number; it is your terminal’s address. You will need the number if you encounter problems using the system and require assistance from the Comptroller’s office Help Desk. The Help Desk uses this number to distinguish your terminal from the thousands of others linked to USAS.
- Enter 10 at the command prompt.
Note: If the message “Unavailable” appears on the right, you have not received security access to HRIS. Contact your security coordinator.
- Press Enter.
The HRIS News Screen appears.

- Press Enter or F3. The HRIS Main Menu screen appears.

Main Menu Screen Elements
- The user ID you entered when you logged on to USAS. In this example, the user ID is USER123.
- The
ALT CMD
field. Use this field to access an HRIS screen by entering the four-letter acronym for the screen. The first two letters of the acronym come from the submenu name, such asIS
for Inquiry Screen submenu. The last two letters of the acronym come from the screen name, such asAP
for Accepted Personnel.Example: To display the Accepted Personnel screen, type ISAP in the
ALT-CMD
field and press Enter.Note: The
ALT-CMD
field or the field defined by element G (EnterOPTION
) may be used interchangeably. - Current date (MM/DD/YYYY).
- Current time (HH:MM:SS).
- Two-letter option codes that are entered in the
OPTION
field (G) of the menu screen. - The full name of the menu screens.
- Enter
OPTION
field. Use this command prompt to enter the two-letter code of the menu you wish to access.Note: If you select the Inquiry Screens (IS) option on the HRIS Main Menu and the HRIS Error Messages screen appears, you have not received security clearance for HRIS. Contact your security coordinator who can request access.

How to Log Off from HRIS
To exit HRIS and log off from USAS:
- Press the F12 key from anywhere in HRIS. The Termination screen appears.
MM/DD/YYYY HRIS 14:26:42.6 TERMINATION SCREEN YOU HAVE REQUESTED TO TERMINATE THIS SESSION. IF YOU HAVE DONE SO BY MISTAKE, PLEASE PRESS 'PF3' KEY TO RETURN TO THE MAIN MENU OTHERWISE PRESS THE 'ENTER' KEY OR ANY OTHER FUNCTION KEY TO TERMINATE THE SESSION. THANK YOU.
- Press Enter or any function key to exit HRIS. The message NAT9995 Natural Session Terminated Normally appears.
LOGOFF5 NATURAL SESSION TERMINATED NORMALLY
- Enter LOGOFF over the message, as illustrated above.
- Press Enter to exit HRIS and display the USAS Session Manager screen.

- Enter LOGOFF at the command prompt.
- Press Enter.
The session manager closes.
How to Change Your Password
After initiating your communications software and entering the USAS command at the Texas map screen, the log-on prompt appears on your screen.

USAS Users:
To change your password:
- Enter your user ID in the
USER ID
field. Press Tab. - Enter your current password in the
PASSWORD
field. The cursor will go to theNEW PASSWORD
field automatically. - Enter a new password in the
NEW PASSWORD
field. The cursor will go to theVERIFY NEW PASSWORD
field automatically. - Enter the new password again in the
VERIFY NEW PASSWORD
field. - Press Enter.
If successful, the USAS menu appears.
How to Contact the Help Desk
Contact the Comptroller’s Help Desk at (512) 463-HELP or 463-4357 and be ready to give them your terminal identification code. Your terminal ID is the eight-character net ID in the upper right corner of the USAS Session Manager screen.
If you have any trouble while using the system, the Help Desk will use your terminal identification code to distinguish your terminal from others on the system.
