   Note: During new hire processing, the VETERAN STATUS and VETERAN PREFERENCE fields default to the value of U (unknown). Information updated (and/or defaulted) is reported based on statutory requirements. To comply with these requirements, agencies are advised to capture and record the applicable veteran status and veteran preference information.
