Agency-Specific Provisions
Salary Provisions for Certain Employees of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department
Background
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is authorized to establish a base salary schedule that applies only to classroom teachers, full-time librarians, full-time counselors and full-time nurses.
The Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) employs teachers, librarians, counselors and nurses to operate year-round educational programs for incarcerated youth ages three through 21.
TJJD teachers, librarians, principals, counselors and supervisors certified by the State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC), and school nurses, may qualify for salary in excess of the minimum salary specified by TEA.
Salary Details
State law establishes minimum and maximum monthly salaries based on a formula for these TJJD employees. The salary, plus benefit replacement pay (BRP) and longevity, cannot exceed the maximum for local school districts of the cities in which the TJJD institution is located.
When no similar position exists in the public schools of the city in which the institution is located, the Texas Juvenile Justice Department may authorize a salary rate above that determined by the formula.
TJJD determines which employees are eligible for this salary schedule.
