Payee Number Requirements
TIN Components

The 11-digit TIN is made up of three components:

  • Prefix (one-digit)
  • Base Number (nine-digits)
  • Check Digit (one-digit)
Component Definition
Prefix

The prefix digit is a number that indicates the type of number provided by the payee:

Note: A prefix of 2 followed by a SSN or ITIN can be used for inquiry purposes.

Base Number The nine-digit base number is the EIN, Comptroller-assigned number or randomly assigned number that replaces SSNs and ITINs.
Check Digit

The check digit is calculated with an algorithm to ensure each TIN is unique.

  • All TINS inquiry screens will calculate the check digit when entering the 10-digit payee number.
  • FMX also provides a Check-Digit Calculator.
